VLS-TS Student Visa Renewal: Complete Guide (2026)

· 8 min read · by Settli

If you're studying in France, the VLS-TS (long-stay visa serving as a residence permit) is the first administrative gateway every student passes through. The 1-year visa you received upon arrival will soon expire, and to continue your studies, renewal is mandatory.

This guide covers everything that's confusing during a first renewal of a VLS-TS Étudiant: timing, required documents, fees, and the ANEF online procedure.

What exactly is a VLS-TS?

VLS-TS stands for Visa de Long Séjour valant Titre de Séjour — a long-stay visa that also serves as your residence permit for the first year.

The visa you received from the French consulate in your home country is this VLS-TS. You must complete the online validation on ANEF within 3 months of your arrival for it to become fully effective. Without validation, you can't renew and may end up in irregular status.

💡 Validation vs renewal

The validation (within 3 months of arrival) and the renewal (after 1 year) are two distinct procedures. This guide is about the renewal.

When should you renew?

VLS-TS is usually valid for 1 year. From the end date on your visa:

✅ Recommended schedule

Documents 3 months before, ANEF submission 2 months before, récépissé in hand 1 month before expiration — safe rhythm.

Where and how to apply?

Since 2024, student visa renewal is mostly handled online via the ANEF platform. In most cases, no in-person préfecture visit is needed.

💡 For Paris (75) residents

Paris residents fall under the Préfecture de Police de Paris, not a regular préfecture. The ANEF online process is the same, but some steps (requests for additional documents, card pickup) are handled by the Préfecture de Police.

Official site: prefecturedepolice.interieur.gouv.fr

Step 1: Access ANEF

Go to administration-etrangers-en-france.interieur.gouv.fr → create account or log in.

Step 2: Select "Demander le renouvellement"

Menu: "Titre de séjour" → "Demander le renouvellement de mon titre de séjour".

Step 3: Choose visa type

Select "Étudiant" or "Élève". For PhD, select "Doctorant".

Step 4: Upload documents

Formats: PDF, JPG, PNG. Each file under 10MB.

Step 5: Submit + download récépissé

After submission, an "Attestation de prolongation d'instruction" or récépissé is issued. This serves as a temporary residence document during processing. Print and carry it with you.

Required documents (checklist)

Documents typically needed to renew a VLS-TS Étudiant:

📄 Identity documents

⭐ Contrat d'engagement républicain (CER) — mandatory since 2024

The law of 24 January 2024 made this document mandatory for every first-time application and renewal by non-EU foreigners. It's a one-page commitment to respect French republican values (laïcité, gender equality, freedom of expression, compliance with law, willingness to learn French).

📥 Paris: Download PDF (Préfecture de Police)

Other cities: search "contrat d'engagement républicain" on your préfecture's website

⚠️ Missing this = application rejected

Without the signed CER, you can't proceed to the next step on ANEF, and you'll be turned away at an in-person RDV. The form is in French only — no official translation. Just sign it.

After application

1. Récépissé issued

Auto-issued by ANEF. Usually valid 4 to 6 months, serves as residence proof during processing.

2. Préfecture processing (1 to 3 months)

Your préfecture reviews the file. Additional documents or interview may be requested → check ANEF and email daily.

3. Decision notification

"Décision favorable" if approved. Refusal → reason given + 2-month appeal window.

4. Receiving your card

You'll be notified to collect the card at your préfecture or post office. An additional €25 may apply.

Frequently asked questions

Q1. ANEF refuses my renewal application

Your visa category may not be in the automated scope. Contact your préfecture by email or via the RDV system.

Q2. My visa expired and I haven't renewed

Within 1-2 months of expiration: possible with a €180 fine. Beyond that: consult an immigration lawyer or your school's international office immediately.

Q3. Gap year — can I still renew?

Yes if officially approved by your school. Unauthorized gap years may be refused.

Q4. I changed my program or school

Possible but requires extra documents: motivation letter + new enrollment + old transcript. Préfecture interview more likely.

Q5. Can I travel during processing?

With a récépissé, you can leave, but re-entering Schengen with récépissé alone may be problematic. Request a visa retour before traveling.

Q6. Can I change my status?

Yes: APS (job search after graduation, 1 year), Salarié, Passeport Talent. Each has its own conditions. Dedicated guide coming soon.

Final thoughts

VLS-TS renewal is mostly about scheduling. Prep documents 3 months before, submit 2 months before — safe rhythm. Set 3 phone reminders: 3 months, 1 month, 1 week before expiration.
